I
have finished reading columns 66 and 67 of The Blacklisted Journalist and all I
can say is WOW!!! You HAVE to check
them out! Column 67 is especially touching and heartfelt, with articles by Al,
Ravi Shankar and others, all paying their deep respects to George and his
LASTING contributions to FAR MORE than the world of music! After reading column
67 I was literally in TEARS:VERY personal and moving tributes ALL!
Column 66 describes George's involvement in the 1992 Madison Square
Garden tribute concert for Bob Dylan, honoring his 30th year as a Columbia
recording artist. It too
provides a wonderful behind the scenes look at George and others involved with
the concert---VERY entertaining and revealing. Here are the URLs for the columns /column67index.html
Enjoy!

DID POT SMOKE KILL GEORGE?
Subject:
Smoking pot

From: "Michael Simmons" <munz@mindspring.com>

Hey
Al:
Long
time no speak, hear or see. But I
love your website and read it regularly.
I
also loved your recent trib to George Harrison.
I've been writing about the science (and politics) of cannabis for
five-and-a-half years now (and been smoking it for 34).
The longest-term study of potheads in the U.S. was done by the
healthgroup Kaiser Permanente in, I believe, the Bay Area.
I think they tracked stoners (and a non-toking control group) for 15
years or more, but including some who'd been lighting up way before the study
actually began. Anyway, I can look it up if you want details. They
found no increased mortality for the red-eyed.
Since
Dr. Donald Tashkin at UCLA discovered that pot smoke has more carcinogens than
tobacco and he did find some abnormalities in the lungs of heads (so to speak),
he conjectured that it could be lethal. But
nobody could figure out why heads weren't dropping dead of lung cancer.
Last year, the very same Dr. Tashkin discovered a cannabinoid in
marijuana that inhibits tumor growth. So
the latest conjecture is that the anti-tumor cannabinoid may cancel out the
carcinogens.
This
is NOT a recommendation that people smoke anything. But if I were you, I wouldn't blame yourself for Beatle
George's illness. More likely it
was his cigarette habit, which he himself blamed.
Hope
you ain't nothin' but fine.

STRANGE
SEX LAWS
1.
In Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals
must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by
death. (Like THAT makes sense.)
2.
In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman's genitals, but is
prohibited from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see
their reflection in a mirror. (Makes you hope she never needs surgery!)
3.
Muslims are banned from looking at the genitals of a corpse. This also applies
to undertakers; the sex organs of the deceased must be covered with a brick or
piece of wood at all times. (A brick?? Make double sure I'm dead first!)
4.
The penalty for masturbation in Indonesia is decapitation. (Whoa! Er, doesn't
that mean no head?)
5.
There are men in Guam whose full time job is to travel the countryside and
deflower young virgins, who pay them for the privilege of having sex for the
first time...Reason: under Guam law, it is expressly forbidden for virgins to
marry. (Let's just think for a minute; is there any job anywhere else in the
world that even comes close to this?)
6.
In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her adulterous husband,
but may only do so with her bare hands. The husband's lover, on the other hand,
may be killed in any manner desired. (Ah! Justice!)
7.
Topless saleswomen are legal in Liverpool, England---but only in tropical fish
stores. (But of course!)
8.
In Cali, Colombia, a woman may only have sex with her husband, and the first
time this happens, her mother must be in the room to witness the act. (Makes one
shudder at the thought.)
9.
In Santa Cruz, Bolivia, it is illegal for a man to have sex with a woman and her
daughter at the same time. (This was a big enough problem that they had to pass
this law?)
10. In Maryland, it is illegal to sell condoms from vending machines with one exception: prophylactics may be dispensed from a vending machine only "in places where alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises." (Is this a great country or what?) ##

Warp
Spasm
This
is an extremely, individual, book, a book where the writer puts us through an
experience whereby we can see paintings differently, read a story differently,
seemingly from the writer's/painter's point of view.
He provides the dots and a guide for connecting them (not all are
numbered), and what we end up with (hopefully, if I understand the writer's
"aim?; or if I don't) is not his "ideas? about these matters, but an
awareness of our ideas, prejudices and ignorance of what is certainly one of the
most important, if not the most important aspect of the human condition:
perception. Am I looking at a painting by the Jew Soutine, or
experiencing a work of art by Chaim Soutine, the artist. If this was, at least
in part, the writer's intent, he succeeded as I quickly lost sight of Basil
King after I started experiencing this book.
This
is not a book to borrow, it must always be available for re-reading. As time
passes my perception alters and so I must refer again to Warp Spasm to help me
put a few words to my perceptions, or better still, to help me watch the images
change in my mind's eye. Now that
is a joy.
